Social media platforms have become crucial in the response of universities to the pandemic, and the latest analysis from the W100 Social Media Rankings shows that our members are stepping up to the mark.

Queen Mary University of London was ranked 25th amongst leading world universities for post-interaction on Instagram in March, with a huge level of engagement in particular around a post on medical students stepping up to fight the virus.

7 other W100 members were also ranked in the Instagram post-interaction top 100, including the University of Leeds, University of Groningen and Keio University (possibly boosted by cherry blossom season in addition to COVID-19 response).

15 W100 members ranked in the top 100 for Likes on Linkedin, with LSE leading the way at No.8 in March 2020. The LSE Linkedin page is very busy, with a wide range of subjects covered, from COVID-19 response to regular academic blogs; although the most liked post was a historic photograph of the campus.

Newcastle University also performed strongly on Instagram, with nearly 7500 likes for an individual post about the donation of ventilators to help Covid-19 response. The University of Melbourne featured a wide range of pandemic related material, including a well-liked post on research showing that the immune system can fight can against the virus.

On Twitter, strong performers in March included the University of Helsinki, McMaster University, and the University of Glasgow (which has gained praise for its proactive use of the platform during the pandemic).

W 100 members performed particularly strongly on conversation Rate with 14 members in the top 100 led by University of Leeds at 8th, and Queen’s University Belfast at 10th.

Finally, on Facebook, 7 Members featured in the top 100 for Post Interaction, with Trinity College Dublin, UNSW Sydney and University of Glasgow leading the way.
