About University of Malaya

The University of Malaya (UM) is a multidisciplinary public research university located in the capital city Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is the oldest and most esteemed university in Malaysia with a student population of around 17,000 from 87 countries and 3,500 academic staff. The university has 12 faculties, 2 academies, 3 centres and 4 institutes which cover the whole spectrum of learning from the Arts and Humanities to the Sciences and Medicine.

The university’s vision is to be an internationally renowned institution of higher learning in research, innovation, publication and teaching. As the top research university in the country, the university’s mission is to advance knowledge and learning through quality research and education for the nation and for humanity.

International Partnerships

Over a long tradition of international partnership, the University Malaya today have built-up a strong bond of mutual partnership with universities and institutions across the globe. To date, we have 739 MoU/A with international institutions that cover students exchange, research collaboration, material transfer agreement, dual academic programs and academic collaboration from approximately 66 countries.

Every year, we welcome more than 2000 inbound exchange students from our international partners and we have about the same number of outbound students. Such programs have enabled our students to experience a wider world outside of their home country and institutions.

Our international partnerships also include memberships in prestigoius international associations such Association of Pacific Rim Univesities, Asia University Network among others.

Notable research areas

The research clusters of the University of Malaya cover broad-based thematic areas of research. These clusters act as an umbrella to support centres of excellence (CoE). Each cluster embraces prominent and evolving themes in cross-disciplinary research. The clusters are organized as Frontier Science, Innovative Technology, Wellness, Sustainability Science, Humanities and Equitable Society.

The UM Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre is one of the nation’s first of six Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and the only one in the field of engineering.

Nanotechnology and Catalysis Research Centre is potential High Centre of Excellence which have been identified by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.
