About Leiden University

Leiden University was founded in 1575 and is one of Europe's leading international research universities. It has seven faculties in the arts, sciences and social sciences, spread over locations in Leiden and The Hague. The University has over 6,500 staff members and 26,000 students. The motto of the university is 'Praesidium Libertatis' - Bastion of Freedom.

International Partnerships

Leiden University has been hosting students from Europe and beyond, through its international partnerships, since the first decade of its existence. With its many study abroad options, annually, the university hosts more than 3,000 international and exchange students each year in its Bachelor and Master programmes, almost 1,000 international PhD students and more than 800 international academic staff.

Leiden University is a member of several international research and education networks, some of which consist of many world class higher education institutes. These include the League of European Research Universities, Coimbra Group, The Europaeum, the European University Association, EuroScholar and the International Association of Universities.

Leiden University's research has a strong disciplinary basis across a broad range of scientific fields. Working from this basis, their researchers conduct both disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. All Leiden researchers have close links with society and are inspired by academic and societal issues regarding the future that they translate into fundamental research questions.
